Matsumoto Trading Co., Ltd. is a trading company that specializes in cosmetic ingredients
and has a history of more than 360 years.
Since it was founded in 1663 in Nihonbashi, Edo as a pharmaceutical products wholesaler named Iwashiya Matsumoto Ihei, our company has been developing by changing business category and operations in steps with changes in the market environment and customer needs.
Most recently, we entered the safety and efficacy testing services and Food & Healthcare business, in addition to selling, importing, and exporting cosmetic and pharmaceutical ingredients.
Moreover, to respond promptly to domestic and overseas needs, we have established overseas bases in China, Vietnam, and Indonesia, and are also working to build a global logistics system.
We will continue to take on challenges inexhaustibly, focusing on sales of cosmetic ingredients and safety testing services, as a company that provides value-added information to customers.
1663年
“Iwashiya Matsumoto Ihei Shoten” is established.
In 1663, the first generation Ihei Matsumoto founded the “Iwashiya Matsumoto Ihei” – a drug merchant in Nihonbashi, Edo. In the records of town orders from Osaka (ordinances issued by the town magistrate’s office to the townspeople), it is confirmed that many drug merchants were established in Edo at this time. “Iwashiya Matsumoto Ihei Shoten” was also established admist this rush period of establishments of drug merchants.

Appearance of “Iwashiya”
In “Edo Shikako,” a geographical journal of Edo (present-day Tokyo), “Iwashiya” in Honmachi 3-chome is mentioned as a drug wholesaler in Edo. According to the Edo Shikako, there were 36 drug merchants in Edo at that time.
1795年
“Rokudai Jika Kiroku – Keizan Kou” (Historical Record of the 6 Generations – Lord Keizan)
In the official record of the Sendai clan, “Rokudai Jika Kiroku – Keizan Kou” (Historical Record of the 6 Generations – Lord Keizan)” (in the possession of the Sendai City Museum), there is an entry for March 13, Kansei 7: “Ihei Matsumoto, a merchant from Edo, who also took care of his business and devoted himself to the affairs of the mine, was given clothes, sake and snacks for his efforts”.

Announcement of joint advertisment of Shiseido and Ihei Matsumoto
Ihei Matsumoto presented a joint advertistment with Shiseido, which was founded in 1872 in Izumocho, Edo (present-day Ginza).
1884年
Tokyo Pharmaceutical Wholesalers Association established (April).
Ihei Matsumoto (9th generation) joins the association as the vice president.
1888年
Establishment of Teikoku Seimei Hoken. Appearance in newspaper advertisement.
Ihei Matsumoto participated in the
establishment of the company as vice president.
1890年
Ihei Matsumoto produces “Yakusha Shindokoro” (The Master’s Guide to the Medicine Industry)
(edited by Ihachi Matsumoto).
It was believed that Ihei Matsumoto produced “Yakusha Shindokoro” in response to the contents of the “Regulations for the Handling of Drugs and Pharmaceutical Businesses,” enacted the previous year. It was Japan’s first law on the policing of drugs and the pharmaceutical sales business. “Yakusha Shindokoro” (edited by Ihachi Matsumoto), is currently available at the National Diet Library.
1900年
Establishment of Tokyo Pharmaceutical Traders Association (July).
Tokyo Pharmaceutical Traders Association was established in response to the Important Export Goods Trade Association Law promulgated in 1897. The 9th generation Ihei Matsumoto was one of the founders of the association and served as its first president. With the establishment of the association, the existing Tokyo Yakuhin Wholesalers Association ceased to play a role and stopped its activities.
1928年
Permission to import and sell drugs for sale was obtained
The company obtained an import and sales license for patent medicine, which are now over-the-counter drugs.
1930年
Certificate of Appreciation for Earthquake Reconstruction
Many of the cooperative’s members were affected by the Great Kanto Earthquake, but with the cooperation of Osaka drug merchants, emergency drug distribution was carried out and business was quickly resumed at the Honmachi area. The company received a letter of appreciation for this series of reconstruction assistance.

Imported raw materials such as stearic acid, lanolin, castor oil, paraffin, vaseline, and whale wax were introduced. Imports were handled by the Trade Division at that time.

Kabushiki Kaisya Iwashiya Matsumoto Ihei Shoten was established.
1945年
“Kabushiki Kaisya Iwashiya Matsumoto Ihei Shoten” merges with “Toei Koka Kabushiki Kaisya” to establish “Matsumoto Seiyaku Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha”.
1955年
The company name was changed from “Matsumoto Seiyaku Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha” to “Kabushiki Kaisha Matsumoto Ihei Shoten”. On June 14 of the same year, the manufacturing division is spun off and “Matsumoto Seiyaku Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha” was established.
1967年
Tanker Truck
The company deployed tanker trucks (6 tons) as a distributor for Esso Sekiyu’s liquid paraffin. Proposals were made to customers such as Taisho Pharmaceutical, Paula Cosmetics, Hollywood, Original Yakusyo, Yanagiya, etc. to install receiving and storage facilities, etc., and facilitated various improvement of work processes.
1970年
The trade name was changed from “Kabushiki Kaisya Matsumoto Ihei Shoten” to “Matsumoto Trading CO., LTD.”. Matsumoto Kyodo Building was completed on November 6, three days after the company name change.

Enactment of “Corporate Philosophy”
1997年
Launching of Open Laboratory and held the 1st Cosmetic Ingredient Seminar.
An open laboratory was established to provide customers with facilities and a place to conduct experiments for formulation studies. In the same year, the first Cosmetic Ingredient Seminar was held with the aim of contributing to the development of the cosmetics industry as a whole.
2003年
Held the 1st Cosmetics Industry Technology Expo (CITE JAPAN)
The 1st Cosmetics Industry Technology Exhibition (CITE JAPAN) was proposed by Ihei Matsumoto and organized by the Federation of Japan Cosmetic Ingredients Associations. Engineers from cosmetics and raw material manufacturers planned the event with the aim of developing and revitalizing the industry. A large number of engineers, researchers, suppliers, cosmetics manufacturers, and other user companies gathered at the venue to exchange the latest information of the industry and held technical presentations.

Started email distribution service “Matsumoto Kosomeru”.
Started distributing “Matsumoto Kosumeru”(Matsumoto Cosmetic Mail) e-mails, which provide the latest information on cosmetic raw materials to keep up with domestic and international trends.

The trade name of “Matsumoto Seiyaku Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisya”, which was established by separating the manufacturing division, was changed to “Matsumoto Fine Chemicals CO., LTD.”
